Abstract

This book explores applications of Jordan theory to the theory of Lie algebras. It begins with the general theory of nonassociative algebras and of Lie algebras and then focuses on properties of Jordan elements of special types. Then it proceeds to the core of the book, in which the author explains how properties of the Jordan algebra attached to a Jordan element of a Lie algebra can be used to reveal properties of the Lie algebra itself. One of the special features of this book is that it carefully explains Zelmanov's seminal results on infinite-dimensional Lie algebras from this point of view. The book is suitable for advanced graduate students and researchers who are interested in learning how Jordan algebras can be used as a powerful tool to understand Lie algebras, including infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Although the book is on an advanced and rather specialized topic, it spends some time developing necessary introductory material, includes exercises for the reader, and is accessible to a student who has finished their basic graduate courses in algebra and has some familiarity with Lie algebras in an abstract algebraic setting.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between nomadic communities in the Black Desert of north-eastern Jordan (c. 300 BC and 900 AD) and the landscapes they inhabited and extensively modified. This book focuses on the architectural features created in the landscape some 2000 years ago which were used and revisited on multiple occasions.

Abstract

This report focused on studying the Arab family strength and challenges in Qatar, Jordan and Tunisia, and how Arab families use their strengths to overcome the challenges. The report concluded that there are seven important themes in family strength emerged: responsibility, support, good communication, respect, conveying traditions, resilience and love. There are six family challenges identified: societal changes, the need for women empowerment, absence of engaged fathers, financial issues, interference from extended family members and conflict in the family or poor communication. The overall findings from this research can be used by communities and states to help guide and develop educational programs, strategies and initiatives to strengthen and empower families throughout the Arab world.

Abstract

This is the account of a remarkable excavation. It started with a modest dig on an unremarkable tell in Jordan. The name of the tell does not occur in the Bible, and no ancient town of any importance was to be expected under the rubble. The excavator Henk Franken had not yet made a name for himself within the archaeological community. And yet, from 1960 onwards history was being (re)written at Tell Deir Alla. To discover the secrets of the tell, the expedition team defied cold, rain and stormy winds for months on end, sleeping in rattling tents and working long days on the tell and in the camp. And with success! A meticulous yet efficient excavation method was introduced, the already tenuous relationship between Bible and archaeology was further exacerbated, and the study of excavated pottery was given a scientific basis. The name Deir Alla became an international benchmark for modern scientific research, for prompt publication of the remarkable finds and for independent interpretation of the excavation results. The story of the excavations at Tell Deir Alla in the 1960s have never been told in any detail, and the excavation results have mostly been published in scholarly books and journals which are difficult to access. This book hopes to remedy that. It recounts the story of the first ten years of the project, from 1959 when funding for the project was sought, until 1969 when the first report was published. The first section describes the organization of the project before the expedition team went out into the field. The second part takes the reader to the actual field work and describes the occupation history of the tell. The story is illustrated by numerous photographs and plans, many of which are being published for the first time.

Abstract

"The origin and development of the khan, also known as caravanserai or roadside inns, is an area of research that has not been extensively addressed in existing studies on the Islamic history and archaeology of Jordan. This is despite the historic importance of khans as way stations for pilgrims undertaking the hajj pilgrimage and their ubiquitous presence throughout the Jordanian landscape. Previous studies that have been carried out on the khans, have been either very general or restricted in terms of geography and chronological/historical scope. Therefore, the present study will include a diachronic study of the development of a particular khan-the Aqaba castle-being an important Islamic khan sat at the junction of two major pilgrim routes, based on both Arabic and Crusader sources, and the results of the excavations undertaken by Ghent University in Aqaba. The main objectives concerning the Khan al-Aqaba project are defining a chronological sequence regarding the occupation of the site and to provide a structural interpretation of the layout of both the standing remains and the underlying structures. The combination of a detailed study of Khan al-Aqaba, coupled with overviews of the other Jordan khans, will result in the first diachronic description and analysis of the origin and development of the khans in Jordan"--

Abstract

The Safaitic rock art of the North Arabian basalt desert is a unique and understudied material, one of the few surviving traces of the elusive herding societies that inhabited this region in antiquity. Yet little is known about this rock art and its role in the desert societies. Why did these peoples make carvings in the desert and what was the significance of this cultural practice? What can the rock art tell us about the relationship between the nomads and their desert landscape? This book investigates these questions through a comprehensive study of over 4500 petroglyphs from the Jebel Qurma region of the Black Desert in north-eastern Jordan. It explores the content of the rock art, how it was produced and consumed by its makers and audience, and its relationship with the landscape. This is the first-ever systematic study of the Safaitic petroglyphs from the Black Desert and it is unique for the study of Arabian rock art. It demonstrates the value of a material approach to rock art and the unique insights that rock art can provide into the relationship between nomadic herders and the wild and domestic landscape.
